I have been having some intermittemt problems with my speedo. It will work fine sometimes and once and a while it only reads 0 and doesn't count the mileage. I thought it was the electronic pickup at the front wheel and was having the dealer order the parts under warranty to replace.
I happen to be going past the dealer one Saturday morning when the speedo happened to not be working so I stopped by just to show them it was an issue. The Tech hooked up the Dealer Tool (Gameboy) and is showed and error, he cleared it and it was working fine. Well, last night I went for a ride and again no speedo. I returned home and hooked up my Tuneboy to it and got and error message. I cleared it and went for a test ride and all is cured for now.
The error code was:
"P1052 UNKNOWN DTC RETURNED"

So here is the story. Apparently the section of the computer that services the speedometer has a VERY narrow band of computer program that is prone to developing a glitch in this particular run of computers. Triumph has, supposedly, fixed this problem but those of us that have this computer will need to get it replaced to completely get rid of the speedo malfunction.
My dealer is a Triumph only dealer and has run into this problem several times, and says replacing the speed sensor is not the fix, as some of you have already found out. There is a diagonistic test that needs to be performed on the bike computer that requires several series of tests ran when the bike is cool, warm and hot this test takes about a half an hour to do so it is fairly complicated. The dealer will need to call and get permission to run this test as it costs about $45.00 and if the Company doesn't give it's O.K. you could be stuck with the bill. Why, because if they run the test and it is not the computer the factory does not want to be stuck with the bill for a none warranty claim.
Triumph has the diagnostic test procedure, but the dealer will have to call and get it from them. My dealer says this is the fix and hasn't had any problems on repaired bikes since they started doing this procedure.
I know this is a long response, but I felt like it deserved a detailed answer since so many of us are having this problem, and none of the dealers seem to be aware of it, at least as far as I can tell from the responses on this thread."
I can confirm that according to the TOA Tech my Dealer spoke with said that there is a compatablity issue with SOME of the ECM's and that IF it is the ECM they would have to replace it under warranty.
The Tech mentioned the "P1502" error code being the important factor here.

If your bike is 2002 onward and has the problem that the speedo sometimes does not work, then do the following.
Download
http://www.tuneboy.com.au/Support/TE_V2.4.2.zip
Open the tune you use, then under "Options" select "Disable Speed Sensor Error Check" and download the tune.
This will turn off the error check for the wheel speed sensor and your speedo will always work.
This fix came from a backup of a fixed ECU from one of our customers, in other words this is the only difference if your dealer swaps your ECU to fix this problem.
